The Mayor's Speech
Good afternoon
My name is Elizabeth North and I have the honour to be the Mayor of Sandhurst
I welcome today our special guests:
·       Mr John Nike, Deputy Lord Lieutenant
·       Mr John Miller High Sheriff of Berkshire
·       The Rt Hon Andrew MacKay MP
·       General Peter Pearson, Commandant of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst
·       Councillor James Finnie, Freeman of the Borough
·       Councillor Clifton Thompson, Mayor of the Borough of Bracknell Forest
And our many others guests including these fine cadets, who I shall not attempt to name individually.
The RMA, as we affectionately call them, have been at the heart of Sandhurst life since they were first established here. They have maintained a tradition of excellence which has resulted in making ‘Sandhurst’ a household name throughout the world.
I have lived in Sandhurst for 20 years. You General, have  been here for over 200 years. That makes me feel very young for which I thank you!
In recognition of the importance that is attached to the Academy, they were given the Freedom of the Borough ten years ago.  It is this Freedom that we are celebrating today.
The Academy greatly value their links with this community and they want to maintain the very strong relationship that has been built over the years. Many of you will recall the wonderful Heritage Day at the RMA in June that was enjoyed by many thousands of local people. On that day General, you threw your gates open to us – today we throw our gates open to you.
I thank you, General Pearson, and your wonderful team for all that you do. Long may it continue.
Today will be a lasting memory for us all. This has been made possible by the sheer hard work of a team of dedicated people ably led by our Executive Officer, Chris Smith. Would you all please join me in showing our appreciation for their efforts.
