Residents urged to get fit and have fun - 4th June 2006
- A fitness fun-day is being held in Sandhurst in a bid to encourage more local people
to take exercise and lead healthier lives.
- The event, which is aimed at all the family, includes a host of fun activities which
people can try for free. These include line dancing and exercise to music, a cycle
trail, jogging and walking trail, boxercise, basketball, short tennis and rowing,
and competition medals will be handed out to people taking part.
- There will be health advice from local medics and physical activity specialists will
be on hand to answer queries and point people in the right direction for a fitter,
healthier lifestyle.
- It’s the fifth fitness funday to be organised in Sandhurst. The first in 1999 was
a big hit with hundreds of local people visiting the event and learning more about
heart disease, weight control, stress and other ailments which can be helped with
regular exercise and a good diet.
- The event is being sponsored by a host of local organisations including the Sandhurst
Group Practice, Sandhurst Town Council, Bracknell Forest Borough Council and the
Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst,
- Dr John Thing of the Sandhurst Group Practice said: “After the first fitness funday
in 1999 we found almost a third of previously inactive attenders now exercised regularly.
- “Regular exercise can help reduce your risk of heart disease, control your weight,
ease aches and pains and relieve stress,” added Dr Thing.
- “People should try and take around 30 minutes of moderate level activity on at least
five days a week. This could be an activity like brisk walking, easy cycling, dancing,
swimming or mowing the lawn. They will soon start to feel the benefits,“ he said.
- Chris Smith, Sandhurst Town Council’s Executive Officer, said: “The last funday was
a great success and many local groups and organisations were represented there, offering
free advice to local people keen to kick start their exercise programme.
- “I hope even more people attend this year’s funday and take advantage of all the
activities on offer,” he added.
- The fitness funday is being held at the Memorial Park on Saturday 4th June between
2pm and 5pm.

Local urged to think up new community events - 2006
- Sandhurst folk are being urged to come forward with ideas for events they would
like to see happening in their town.
- Sandhurst Town Council is giving people the opportunity to put forward their ideas
for activities, shows and exhibitions that could be included in Sandhurst’s social
calendar.
- The town already hosts a series of annual events including the popular donkey derby,
tug of war, fun fair, fireworks display and gardening show.
- Now councillors are keen to hear what more could be done to make Sandhurst an even
more eventful place to live, work and play.
- Sandhurst Town Council Executive Officer Chris Smith said: “We currently host a number
of successful events throughout the year – for example the donkey derby which attracts
around 8,000 people. We’re keen to see more happening in Sandhurst but, rather than
impose our ideas on the community, we’d like to hear from local people about what
they’d like to see.
- “We’re more than happy to give support – either financial or the benefit of our experience
in organising events – however, we would like to think that the people coming up
with the ideas will play a big part in making it all happen,” he added.
Anyone with
bright ideas should contact the council on 01252 879060 or

Top Sandhurst attraction reopens - 5th August 2002
- One of Sandhurst’s main attractions re-opens this week. The Coffee Spot throws open
its doors on Thursday after being closed for the winter.
- And regular customers will notice a few changes when they pop in for their drink
and snack.
- Over the winter a patio, which will seat about 30 people, has been laid which means
customers can enjoy their food and drink outdoors in the warm weather.
- And there are changes to the menu too with a wider range of sandwiches and toasted
sandwiches alongside old favourites like beans on toast.
- Jennie Wigley, who runs the café with partner Jon Gooda said: “The new patio is going
to be very, very good and we are really excited about re-opening and seeing so many
of our regular customers – along with some new ones.
- “We’ve been planning new fillings for sandwiches which will be on the menu this year
and we hope they prove popular with our customers. And we will also be continuing
with the healthy options snacks – for example we use microwave chips rather than
fried, and that’s seems to be something our customers appreciate.
- “As usual we will be open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm and may stay open later
on some occasions if there are events taking place in the Memorial Park,” she added.
- Chris Smith Sandhurst Town Council’s Executive Officer said: “We were sorry to have
to close the café over the winter, but the number of customers falls during this
time making it an unviable option. I’m delighted it is now back in business and would
urge as many people as possible to come along and sample the fare.
- “The new patio is kitted out with plants, tables and chairs and will be an enjoyable
spot to sit over a coffee and look out over the park,” he added.
Residents and businesses join major new cleanup campaign -
- A major campaign has been launched in a bid to clean up Sandhurst and encourage local
people to take a pride in their communities.
- The campaign is called Sandhurst Pride and Sandhurst Town Councillors have been visiting
a host of businesses, shops and pubs urging them to display special stickers showing
they support the scheme. So far, all organisations visited have given it their backing.
- Stickers are also now available from the Town Council offices for local people keen
to back the scheme - they can be displayed in car or home windows.
- Sandhurst Pride will complement the work already being carried out by the Clean Team
– a partnership between the council, SITA and local volunteers who carry out regular
clean-ups in their neighbourhoods.
- Sandhurst Mayor Jean Bettison said: “As part of Sandhurst Pride we are urging local
people to join forces with us to work together to keep our town looking neat and
tidy and an even cleaner and more pleasant place to live, work and visit.
- “I’d encourage everyone to bin their litter and gum rather than dropping it in the
street. People also need to think more about recycling as much of their litter as
they can.
- “Another key plank of the campaign is to encourage dog owners to be responsible and
to clean up after their pets. The Council has contributed towards the Bracknell Forest
Dog Warden at a cost of more than £3,800 and he keeps the area as clean as possible,
but we do need dog owners to do their bit too. There are doggy bags available from
the Council offices and I’d urge people to pick up a few when they are next passing,”
said Cllr Bettison.
- “We also need people to think before they park and make sure they are not blocking
thoroughfares. And people are also being asked to keep footpaths clear by being considerate
with signs they erect and also by the way they trim hedges and trees,” she added.
